Candidates for FCSD#1 School Board

We agree with our district’s mission: “In partnership with families and community, we educate students to become responsible citizens who respect one another and have the motivation, skills, and knowledge to succeed.”  There are many examples of success among our more than 1600 students that indicate our district is doing what is needed to meet this goal. This success is due to two things: (1)  Lander’s schools attract educators who are passionate about their profession and dedicated to the success of their students, and (2) Lander’s families strongly value traditional education.

How can we maintain and even improve upon our past success?

  • High-quality teachers
    • Properly compensated
    • Well-trained
    • Respected for their service and prudence in our community
  • Parental Involvement
    • Foster a collaborative relationship built on trust between parents and teachers
  • Curriculum that focuses on critical thinking and creativity
    • A commitment to the humanities: literature, writing, history, geography, and the arts
    • Encouraging the students to proudly own the legacy of great writers and historical figures who made Western Civilization.
    • “Soft Skills” are essential and include; application of knowledge and critical thinking, resiliency, adaptability, life skills to be independent, and the ability to engage in appropriate civil discourse.
  • Identify barriers to graduate
    • Aptitude in Math is a key indicator that a student is likely to graduate
    • Access to technical education is a time-honored path for those students not bound for college.  These students need to be prepared for careers in the trades. This can be done with districts collaborating with local businesses for internships and work study programs.
  • Navigate challenges with declining enrollment and reduced budgets
    • Lander’s schools have seen a decline in enrollment which is likely to continue.  Among other reasons, this decline matches demographics changes across the state showing fewer children being born and thus fewer kids in school.
    • Engage all stakeholders in finding the most appropriate way to re-prioritize available funds in reduced budgets.
